South African sneaker boutique Shelflife has tapped local designer Dr. Z for its latest collaborative project: the “City of Gold” New Balance 574. Inspired by the city of Johannesburg, the release showcases South Africa’s largest metropolis to sneaker aficionados across the globe by taking cues from the city’s gold trade, local train system, “Parktown Prawn” king cricket, and African tribal art and applying them throughout. Built from mesh, nubuck, and pigskin suede, the kicks don reflective 3M paneling along with bright yellow lace tips, matching lace jewels, and a speckled sole. Packaged with multiple sets of laces, a canvas carrying bag, and a custom keyring, the New Balance 574 “City of Gold” is set to hit Shelflife on April 17 before hitting additional retailers around the world on April 28.
